100% Natural Hair Color From Act By Nature! Warning: Is Your Natural Hair Color Really 100% Natural?

6:15 AM
Finally! 100% Natural Hair Color from Act By Nature!

Up until we came across Palette By Nature, a.k.a. Act By Nature there was not one single hair color product on the market that was truly 100% natural other than Henna Products. The only problem with Henna Products is that they don't effectively give women good grey coverage. Even though there are several brands that advertise themselves as "Natural" and are readily available in some major stores and Online, they are not what they lead you to believe. Little did we know, until we started doing more research that ALL of the current "Natural" Hair Color Brands on the market still contain toxic chemicals. They advertise all of the things they DON'T have in them, but don't let you in on all of the dangerous chemicals they still DO contain. The reason isn't because they are trying to necessarily out and out deceive you, but more that they haven't come up with a 100% Natural Formula that really will cover the grey and give you a wide range of shades to choose from. So they tell you their products DON'T contain: Resorcinol, Amonia, Parabens, and stress the "Natural" ingredients they DO contain such as active vegetable ingredients. The problem is, some of the most toxic hair coloring ingredients still remain in their products in order to make them effective. There hasn't been one company capable of getting the formula safe, effective, 100% natural and with a wide range of shades to choose from up until now! Act By Nature, has finally done what has been thought to be impossible by other companies!

Act By Nature is 100% natural, easy to use, smells good, and extremely effective! You have to try this for yourself! We are offering an exclusive coupon for you to try Act By Nature now! Check them out Here!

This is the first in a series of articles we will be publishing on the Hair and Skin Care industries. We, along with many other consumer advocate groups and companies, feel that there can never be too much information put forward about about the toxic ingredients still used in most skin care and hair care products. Women have been misinformed and have also turned a blind eye to the toxic, unsafe ingredients they are often unknowingly exposing themselves to on a daily basis. We want to not only show that there are many wonderful safe alternatives available now, but that there is no longer any reason to choose a toxic product, ever! Especially when going to the hair salon or local spa. When women start requesting organic, all natural products, their skin and hair care professionals will start to listen!
There are quite a few Industry Insider Secrets that the Major Companies definitely don't want you to know and they certainly aren't very pretty. The public usually has no idea about the tricks used by "beauty" companies to cover up the names of toxic ingredients within their products. It isn't until books or articles are written by "Beauty" company insider's that expose the truth with regards to the use of so many toxic, unsafe ingredients, before the public has any idea of the wool being pulled over their eyes. Sugar Obsessed America Is On A Continual Quest To Find The Perfect Sugar Substitute. Does It Even Exist?

4:36 PM
Before You Read This, Go Here!

By Noelle Quero

I am a student of health, nutrition and prevention. I truly believe that most of the health issues people face, barring certain pre-existing genetic conditions, are the direct result of what we do and don't eat. I also believe that not everyone is supposed to be eating exactly the same things. However, there is one thing that I believe affects everyone universally the same, which is also at the root of most health problems and it is sugar. I am often in discussions with different people regarding their eating habits or health complaints and what I have come to realize is that most people can find several things to complain about in regards to their own health. I also find that the same people complaining about various health issues are not usually sticking to very healthy diets, admittedly. So when the person I am having a discussion with asks me what do I eat or do to stay "trim" or in "such good shape" I always tell them the truth. I no longer eat gluten, sugar or most dairy. I always explain that I did not omit everything over night. This was a gradual one year process where I slowly omitted foods as a way to help my allergy issues. (Which it did) The next question that follows is almost always the same no matter who I am having a discussion with, "What do you do for sugar then? Don't you eat any sugar at all? What do you eat for dessert?" To which I answer, "I eat lots of fruit and no longer crave sugary foods like I used to. Once I stopped eating sugar, it took only a few days for my body to stop craving that daily sugary snack." This is, by the way, completely true. If you have never tried to not eat sugar, try it for a few days and you too will be surprised at how quickly the body really does stop craving it. I strongly suggest having fruit in the house and Raw Unfiltered honey as well, just in case you need a little "sweet" fix. What's always interesting to me though is that people don't seem to be as obsessed with the fact that I don't eat gluten or most dairy. It's the "no sugar" part they get stuck on and wonder how could they themselves ever avoid it. And understandably so. We are absolutely a nation completely addicted to and medicated by sugar. Sugar is used in everything celebratory, congratulatory, fun, festive and rewarding. How could you not eat sugar and live a happy life? It couldn't be possible, could it?

When I say that I no longer eat sugar, that doesn't mean I never have anything sweet touch my lips, ever. It's actually quite the contrary. The only difference is, I don't add sugar to anything anymore nor do I buy products that contain sugar. However, I do eat fruit daily, and I will occasionally have something "sweet" albeit a small amount, and I will have a bite of a dessert if we're celebrating. I just don't eat sugar on a daily basis or bake with it or add it to anything or have it in the house nor do I really crave it. When we do buy "sweet" things, I make sure they are sweetened with organic fruit sugar or Raw Unfiltered Organic Honey, the only sweetener I believe is truly healthy. But this article has nothing to do with me or what I do. This article is the result of hundreds of conversations and discussions I have with people on almost a daily basis on the subject of sugar. I truly believe that the majority of health problems can all be traced back to American's intake of sugar and foods that immediately turn into sugar once they are eaten. Food companies know that American's are addicted to sugar but they also know that American's are at the same time slowly becoming aware that their weight issues and health problems can be traced back to sugar. So they are all in a race to find the "healthiest" sugar substitute possible. Especially because more and more people are realizing that the current sugar substitutes on store shelves might be quite unhealthy after all. Below I am Re-Publishing a very thoroughly researched article about all the different types of Sugar Substitutes, the Companies that Manufacture them, How They are Made and What they actually do to the body. You will find that in the end, nature always does it right and does it best. When we alter what nature intended we are most likely going to suffer negative consequences. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Also, all is never as it seems when it comes to Sugar Substitutes. One thing to remember too when reading the latest, greatest research on the Newest Sugar Super Star is this, most of the information is being funded and put out by the companies that stand to profit the most, the company's manufacturing the products! Even though many new sugar products are being touted as "Organic" or "All Natural" once again it is false marketing and advertising. I strongly suggest reading this full article to truly understand the Sugar Deceptions we are being fed by Food Manufacturers. This includes Z-Sweet, Truvia, all the others. A good rule to follow is this: If a product is altered from it's natural state too much, chances are your body will not know what to do with it and it isn't natural any longer.

Is Agave Nectar Really A Healthy Sugar Substitute?

3:34 PM
Before You Continue Reading, Go Here!

Uh oh, it seems we've been misled again by some very savvy marketing campaigns. Before you go on thinking you found your dream sugar substitute, sweeter than honey and sugar combined and healthier, read this. Agave Nectar is one of the latest Super Stars being added to the growing list of Sugar Alternatives now available on grocery store shelves. Who wouldn't be intrigued by a sugar substitute touted as "No Glycemic", "Organic" and "Healthy"? It's no wonder that all of the information you find on Agave is positive. It is supposedly safe for diabetics and anyone wanting to watch their sugar intake. Taken straight from Blue Agave's website, several common claims found on many other sites as well:
"We are proud to present our newest health food product brand, Maya Olé. Our blue agave syrup is exclusively produced in Guadalajara, Mexico. It is a natural, organic sweetener that is lower in calories than sugar and has a very low glycemic index, allowing it to be used, under medical guidance, by persons concerned with sugar intake. Modern medical science is revealing more and more the harmful effects of sugar, and how sugar is linked to numerous illnesses and health problems, including obesity and diabetes. Organic blue agave syrup can be used as a healthy and natural sweetener to replace sugar in cooking, beverages, and baking."
As is often the case though, not all is at seems. Agave is apparently absorbed into the body just like other sugars and isn't the "No-Glycemic" wonder sweetener after all. Neither is it organic! Please read this extremely thorough article from Mercola.Com below.

By Dr. Mercola

agaveThe popularity of agave syrup, also called agave nectar, is on a meteoric rise -- thanks in large part to clever marketing which positions the product as a healthy alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Agave is also heavily promoted as a low glycemic food, enticing diabetics.

I’ll discuss just how “healthy” agave is in a minute.

The Amazing Power of Marketing

In case you doubt the influence of marketing in setting trends and consumer buying habits, look at these statistics:

  • Agave products more than tripled in number between 2003 and 2007.
  • McCormick & Co., a major food manufacturer, placed agave syrup in its “top 10 flavors” list for 2009.

Agave can now be found in prepared tea, energy and “health” drinks, nutrition bars, desserts, and other food items typically found in health food stores.

Agave is also quickly crossing over from the health food market to mainstream grocery chains, and consumers (especially vegans and raw food enthusiasts) are buying up bottles of the stuff to use in place of other sweeteners, like honey.

Why Agave Syrup is the Hottest New Trend in Sugar Alternatives

Taste. Agave has a subtle, delicate flavor many people enjoy.

Sweetness. Agave syrup can be up to three times as sweet as table sugar, so it takes less to sweeten a food or beverage.

Public perception. Highly effective agave product marketing campaigns have persuaded consumers the sweetener is a healthy alternative to sugar. As more and more people veer away from deadly artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup (but not from their sugar addiction, unfortunately), they are on the hunt for safer, healthier alternatives.

About the Agave Plant

Agaves grow primarily in Mexico, but you can also find them in the southern and western United States, as well as in South America. Previously, it was most commonly known as a primary ingredient of tequila. Agaves are not cacti, but are actually related to the lily and amaryllis families of plants.

There are over 100 species of agave plants, in a wide variety of sizes and colors.

Edible parts of the agave are the flowers, leaves, stalks and the sap. It is the sap of the plant that is used to make agave syrup.

Commercially available agave syrup or nectar is thought to be produced primarily from blue agave plants grown in Southern Mexico. This is because the blue agave has a high carbohydrate content, which results in a high concentration of fructose in the final product.

Harvesting the Sap

When an agave plant is about seven to 10 years old, the leaves are removed to expose the core, or pina, of the plant. The harvested pina looks like a large pineapple and can weigh anywhere from 50 to 150 pounds.

Sap is removed from the pina, filtered, and heated to break down the carbohydrates into sugars.

The same agave plant produces all three varieties of commercially sold syrup, depending on the amount of heat used in processing. These varieties include:

  • Raw (color is similar to maple syrup and flavor is similar to caramel)
  • Light (lighter color and flavor than raw)
  • Amber (similar in color and flavor to raw)

Many varieties of agave nectar are processed at relatively low temperatures (below 118°F) and are marketed as a “raw” food.

The Myth of Agave as a “Healthy” Sugar Substitute

  • Agave syrup is neither a natural food nor organic

Fully chemically processed sap from the agave plant is known as hydrolyzed high fructose inulin syrup.

According to Dr. Ingrid Kohlstadt, a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and an associate faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health:

“[Agave is] almost all fructose, highly processed sugar with great marketing.”

  • Agave syrup is not low calorie.

Agave syrup is about 16 calories per teaspoon, the same as table sugar.

  • Agave syrup may not have a low glycemic index.

Depending upon where the agave comes from and the amount of heat used to process it, your agave syrup can be anywhere from 55 percent to 90 percent fructose! (And it’s likely you won’t be able to tell from the product label.)

This range of fructose content hardly makes agave syrup a logical choice if you’re hoping to avoid the high levels of fructose in HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).

And if you’re diabetic, you should know that the alleged benefit of agave for diabetics is purely speculative. Very few agave studies have been documented, and most involved rats. There have been no clinical studies done on its safety for diabetics.

Since most agave syrup has such a high percentage of fructose, your blood sugar will likely spike just as it would if you were consuming regular sugar or HFCS, and you would also run the risk of raising your triglyceride levels. It’s also important to understand that whereas the glucose in other sugars are converted to blood glucose, fructose is a relatively unregulated source of fuel that your liver converts to fat and cholesterol.

A significant danger here is that fructose does not stimulate your insulin secretion, nor enhance leptin production, which is thought to be involved in appetite regulation. (This was detailed in one of the most thorough scientific analyses published to date on this topic.)

Because insulin and leptin act as key signals in regulating how much food you eat, as well as your body weight, dietary fructose can also contribute to increased food intake and weight gain.

Therefore, if you need to lose weight, fructose is one type of sugar you’ll definitely want to avoid, no matter what the source is.

Other Dangers of Fructose

In addition, consuming high amounts of concentrated fructose may cause health problems ranging from mineral depletion, to insulin resistance, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and even miscarriage in pregnant women.

Fructose may also interfere with your body’s ability to metabolize copper. This can result in depletion of collagen and elastin, which are vital connective tissues. A copper deficiency can also result in anemia, fragile bones, defects in your arteries, infertility, high cholesterol and heart disease, and uncontrolled blood sugar levels.

Additionally, fructose consumption has been shown to significantly increase uric acid. Elevated levels of uric acid are markers for heart disease. It has also been shown to increase blood lactic acid, especially in diabetics. Elevations in lactic acid can result in metabolic acidosis.

Isolated fructose has no enzymes, vitamins or minerals and can rob your body of these nutrients in order to assimilate itself. Hence, consumption of fructose can also lead to loss of vital minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Other Reasons You Should Steer Clear of Agave

  1. There are very few quality controls in place to monitor the production of agave syrup. Nearly all agave sold in the U.S. comes from Mexico. Industry insiders are concerned agave distributors are using lesser, even toxic, agave plants due to a shortage of blue agave.

There are also concerns that some distributors are cutting agave syrup with corn syrup -- how often and to what extent is anyone’s guess. In addition, the FDA has refused shipments of agave syrup due to excessive pesticide residues.
  1. Agave syrup is not a whole food -- it is fractionated and processed. The sap is separated from the plant and treated with heat, similar to how maple sap is made into maple syrup. Agave nectar is devoid of many of the nutrients contained in the original, whole plant.
  1. Agave syrup is not a live food. The natural enzymes are removed to prevent agave syrup from fermenting and turning into tequila in your food pantry or cabinet.
  1. Agave is, for all intents and purposes, highly concentrated sugar. Sugar and sweeteners wreak havoc on your health and are highly addictive.

The Case Against Sugar

No matter your nutritional type, sugar is not good for you. Certainly you can tolerate small amounts if you are healthy and the majority of your diet is healthy, but let’s face it the average American is consuming over 150 pounds a year of sugar or nearly half a pound a day. Ideally your annual consumption should be well under ten pounds per YEAR.

Sugar increases your insulin and leptin levels and decreases receptor sensitivity of both these hormones. This can lead to a wide range of health problems, including weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, premature aging, and heart disease.

Sugar suppresses your immune system, causing problems with allergies and digestive disorders. It can even bring on depression.

For a comprehensive list of the dangers of sugar to your body, read 76 ways sugar can destroy your health now.

Worse Than Any Sugar: Artificial Sweeteners

The worst of all possible choices are artificial sweeteners. They are, without question, far more damaging to your health than regular sugar.

While I don’t recommend it, consuming sugar in moderation isn’t likely to cause serious health problems. Moderation in this case is five pounds or less per year, which is a far cry from the 150 pounds per year consumed by the majority of Americans.

If you’re interested in kicking your sugar addiction, I highly recommend trying a meridian tapping technique called Turbo Tapping, which has helped thousands of people kick their sugar and soda habits.

Have You Tried Stevia?

If you’re determined to sweeten your foods and beverages, I urge you to consider using stevia. Stevia is a sweet herb, safe and natural. It is much sweeter than sugar, but has no calories. It is my personal choice of sweetener.

In the U.S., you’ll find stevia not in the sweetener aisle of your local grocery, but in the supplement section. It can be used in appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, vegetables, desserts -- just about anything.

If you’ve tried stevia and were bothered by an aftertaste, it could be the way the plant was processed. You should try a few different brands until you find one that tastes good.

However, if you have insulin issues, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or if you’re overweight, I suggest you avoid all sweeteners, including stevia, since any sweetener can decrease your insulin sensitivity.

The Organic Shea Butter Company - The Many Healing Powers Of Shea Butter

11:30 AM

Before You Read This, Please Go Here:

The Amazing Benefits of Shea Butter:
While you may have only recently heard of Shea Butter, its use is far from a recent development. The benefits of Shea Butter have been well known for centuries. Africans have used Shea Butter for many generations to protect and rejuvenate their hair and skin. Shea Butter is not only for those of African descent though. Everyone can take advantage of Shea Butter's benefits. Today, Shea Butter is available in pure form and as an ingredient in many products to help with maintenance of the hair and skin and relief from many common ailments.

What is Shea Butter?

Shea Butter is only found in the tropics of Africa. It is extracted from the nuts of the Shea-Karite tree which begins to bear fruit after about 15 years; and can take up to 30 years to bear a quality crop of nuts with a high content of irremovable fatty acid. It is this irremovable fatty acid that gives Shea Butter its unique healing properties and makes it far superior to cocoa butter and other vegetable butters. Traditionally, Shea Butter was extracted by people who picked the nuts, cracked them, grilled them and pounded them. They were boiled in water for hours until the Shea Butter rose to the surface. It was then scooped into gourds and left to cool and set. Shea Butter is solid at room temperature although it quickly liquefies right around body temperature. This Shea Butter is called unrefined Shea Butter or raw Shea Butter. Since Shea Butter is an all natural product, it can vary widely in quality, appearance and smell depending on where it is produced from and how it is refined or extracted.

Most Shea Butter comes from West Africa. Although a more soft and smoother variety from East Africa is beginning to appear on the market.

How can I tell if something is good Shea Butter?

Pure Shea Butter can be found in three types of extractions. Also, recently, Shea Butter has begun to be graded.
  • Raw or unrefined- extracted using water. The color ranges from like cream (similar to whipped butter) to grayish yellow. This is the original form of Shea Butter.
  • Refined- is more highly processed. Has many of its natural components still intact.
  • Highly refined or processed- solvents are used to increase the yield (hexane is an example). The color is pure white.

How should Shea Butter smell?
Shea Butter has a natural smell, which is not unpleasant to most people. The smell of raw or lightly refined West African Shea varies from nutty to similar to Crisco® or shortening. Over time the smell of the Shea Butter will diminish. If an unrefined Shea Butter has almost no smell, it is probably getting old. Shea Butter should not stink, not matter how old it is. It is possible for Shea Butter to go rancid. If it does, do not use it. If you do not like the smell of natural, raw Shea Butter, you can purchase more highly refined Shea Butter that has been de-odorized and filtered through clay. However, we do not recommend ever buying Shea Butter that has been refined using hexane or other solvents.

How do I store Shea Butter?
Shea Butter does not need to be refrigerated. However, over a period of two or three years, the Shea Butter will begin to lose some of its effectiveness. As the natural ingredients begin to break down, some of the healing benefits will be reduced, but the Shea Butter will continue to be an effective moisturizer. Store Shea Butter is a cool (not necessarily cold) place. If you're going to use it within a couple of years, you should have no problems.

My Shea Butter melted
One of the great things about Shea Butter is its low melting point. When you apply it to your skin, it literally liquefies. However, one of the bad things about Shea Butter is its low melting point. It's quite possible it will melt in a hot room. It may even be melted when it's delivered to you in the summer months. If this happens, don't worry. The Shea Butter is good. Just take the lid off of the container and set it in the refrigerator until it gets hard again. As it begins to cool, you might want to give it a stir to bring the olein (liquid parts) back into contact with the stearin (solid parts) so that the Shea Butter is uniform throughout.

What color should my Shea Butter be?
The color of unrefined Shea Butter depends on the Shea nuts used. Shea nuts will vary in color from almost white to yellow. Therefore, refined Shea Butter will vary in color. You will not be able to determine the authenticity or quality of Shea Butter based strictly on its color. There is even a naturally golden yellow colored Shea Butter. Shea Butter should never be green, extremely hard or greasy though. Most Shea Butter is a creamy color. Shea Butter that is pure white is highly refined and may or may not have its healing properties intact depending on how it was refined.

How can Shea Butter benefit me? Shea Butter can provide relief from everything from just dry skin to many minor dermatological diseases (if you have a serious skin condition, you should see a doctor). It has been clinically shown to provide benefits. Here are some of the benefits of Shea Butter for the skin:

  • Daily skin moisturizer (face and body)
  • Dry skin relief
  • Dry scalp
  • Skin rash- including diaper rash
  • Skin peeling, after tanning
  • Blemishes and wrinkles
  • Itching skin due to dryness
  • Sunburn
  • Shaving cream to reduce razor irritation
  • Small skin wounds
  • Skin cracks
  • Soften tough skin on feet (especially heels)
  • Stretch mark prevention during pregnancy
  • Minor burns
  • Eczema
  • Sun and wind protection
  • Even skin tone
  • Reduce blemishes and scarring
  • Eliminating scalp irritation from dryness or chemical processing
  • Preventing bumps after shaving
  • Reducing acne (especially in combination with African Black Soap)
  • Absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue
  • Helps restore elasticity to skin
  • Restores luster to hair

How does Shea Butter benefit my skin?

Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair. Shea Butter is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat). Shea Butter has between 7-12% unsaponifiables. For comparison, avocado oil, a well known skin conditioner, has between 2-6%. This high level of unsaponifiables is one of the properties that makes Shea Butter so invaluable in treating the conditions listed above. Also, Shea Butter easily penetrates the skin allowing the skin to breathe and not clogging pores. Shea Butter has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. So, it provides some degree of protection from the sun. Shea Butter is also anti-inflammatory making it useful in treating rheumatism.

While we make no medical claims about our Shea Butter, we do have anecdotal evidence that it is very useful in treating minor skin conditions. We have had several customers who have used Shea Butter for eczema and/or psoriasis and told us it works as well as steroids at a fraction of the cost and without the side effects. We have a customer with an allergy to the sun. When she began using our Nubian Heritage Shea Butter lotion (not even pure Shea Butter), she accidentally discovered that it prevented the rash she normally would get from even a small amount of exposure to the sun.

How does Shea Butter benefit my hair?

Shea Butter provides moisture to dry or damaged hair from the roots to the very tips, repairing and protecting against weather damage, dryness and brittleness. It also absorbs quickly and completely into the scalp to rehydrate without clogging pores. It is particularly beneficial for processed and heat-treated hair. It is an excellent treatment for dry scalp. It restores luster to damaged hair.

Is all Shea Butter the same?

All Shea Butter is not the same. Shea Butter loses some of its healing properties as it sits on the shelf, so very old Shea Butter is not as beneficial. Refining techniques will vary. Highly processed Shea Butter will not be as effective. Sometimes Shea Butter is mixed with other ingredients that reduce its benefits. Then, there are those products that add very little Shea Butter but prominently display "Shea Butter" on the label. While Shea Butter is not very expensive, you should be aware of products that claim to provide the benefits of Shea Butter and sell for very low prices. Many manufacturers are taking advantage of the Shea Butter buzz by adding a little Shea Butter to a very inexpensive product implying you can get the benefits of Shea Butter in their product.

Treasured Locks takes care to source our Shea Butter only from reputable sources to ensure freshness, quality and the refining technique to ensure there are no contaminants and that the "good stuff" is left in.

What can I tell by looking at the label?

Ingredients on the label should be listed in the order from the ingredient that is the most to the least. Therefore, you should look for Shea Butter products that list Shea Butter early on the list of ingredients. You should know the ingredients before you buy any Shea Butter product and should buy from a reputable source. The more Shea Butter in a product, the greater the likelihood, you will receive the full benefits of Shea Butter.

Where can I get good Shea Butter?

You can get quality Shea Butter products right here. We carry a wide variety of products from pure Shea Butter to Shea Butter lotions, soaps and lip balm. Just click on the Shea Butter Products button on the left to see our full selection. All of the Shea Butter we carry is of the highest quality. We are very selective about where we obtain our Shea Butter and the extraction methods used. We will not accept any Shea Butter that has been extracted using solvents. As of June, 2004, we have found a source of Grade A Shea Butter. This is certified to be of the highest quality by an independent laboratory. You can find cheaper Shea Butter and Shea Butter products. But, you will not find better ones. Our Shea Butter products use copious amounts of Shea Butter. Some of the major manufacturers are jumping on the Shea Butter bandwagon now by adding small amounts of Shea Butter to their products. Don't be fooled by this. Our pure Shea Butters are of the highest grade, from our ultra pure refined shea butter to our 100% Pure Natural Shea Butter to our East African Shea Butter from Uganda.

What's the difference between raw Shea butter, refined Shea butter and highly refined Shea Butter?
The differences between raw, refined and highly refined Shea Butter lie in how the Shea Butter is extracted from the nut and how it is processed after that. Manual extraction processes leave more of the raw ingredients in the Shea Butter. After it is extracted, it can be further refined removing color and impurities that some people don't like. This further refining can also remove some of the smell. You can think of the difference between raw Shea Butter and refined Shea Butter as being similar to the difference between wheat bread and white bread. Truly raw Shea Butter can even be unfiltered. That is one end of the spectrum. On the other end, there is Shea Butter that is extracted using chemicals that is pure white, has no smell and has lost a lot of its healing properties in the process.

All of our Shea Butter is mechanically extracted. No chemicals (other than water) are used in the process. Our raw Shea Butter is lightly filtered. But, retains its natural color and smell. Our Ultra Pure Shea Butter is refined. It is further processed by being put through clay filters and the odor is vacuumed out. It retains its healing properties and moisturizing ability.

Do I want raw Shea Butter or Refined Shea Butter?
This is really a matter of preference. I prefer raw Shea Butter. Unless you do not like the smell of Shea Butter, we recommend you go with raw. The more the Shea Butter is processed, the higher the chance some of the "good stuff" is going to be removed. Certainly, none of the healing or moisturizing properties of Shea Butter are enhanced by the further processing to make it white and odorless. If you do not like the smell of Shea Butter, try to get refined Shea Butter that is refined without the use of solvents. Or, you could try the East African Shea Butter, which has a much milder aroma than West African Shea Butter.

What about East African Shea Butter?

There is some confusion as to which shea butter is better, West African (Vitellaria Paradoxa) or East African (Vitellaria Nilotica). East African Shea Butter is different from that of the West African varieties in that it is higher in olein (the liquid part of the Shea Butter). Because of this, East African Shea Butter is softer and more fragrant than West African Shea Butter. The product is highly valued and gives Ugandan women farmers over five times the amount received by their West African counterparts. East African or Ugandan Shea Butter has a higher absorption rate due to lower saturated fatty acids. East African Shea Butter has less vitamin A and less sterols. For a natural vitamin A cream or to use for prevention of stretch marks, you might want to use West African Shea Butter. However, if you are looking for natural, intense moisturize, East African Shea Butter is the way to go.

How Does A Product Get The USDA Organic Seal?

7:49 AM
Organic Labeling and Marketing
The Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) and National Organic Program (NOP) assure consumers that the organic agricultural products they purchase
are produced, processed, and certifi ed to consistent
national organic standards. The labeling requirements
of the NOP apply to raw, fresh products and
processed products that contain organic agricultural
ingredients. Agricultural products that are sold,
labeled, or represented as organic must be produced
and processed in accordance with the NOP
standards.
Except for operations whose gross income from
organic sales totals $5,000 or less, farm and processing
operations that grow and process organic agricultural
products must be certified by USDA-accredited
certifying agents.
Labeling requirements are based on the percentage
of organic ingredients in a product.
Agricultural products labeled “100 percent organic”
and “organic”
Products labeled as “100 percent organic” must
contain (excluding water and salt) only organically
produced ingredients and processing aids.
Products labeled “organic” must consist of at least 95
percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). Any remaining product ingredients must consist of nonagricultural substances approved on the National List including specific non-organically
produced agricultural products that are not
commercially available in organic form.
Products meeting the requirements for “100 percent
organic” and “organic” may display these terms and
the percentage of organic content on their principal
display panel.

Click Here To See Our "Avoid Ingredients" Lists

The USDA seal and the seal or mark of involved
certifying agents may appear on product packages
and in advertisements.
Agricultural products labeled “100 percent organic”
and “organic” cannot be produced using excluded
methods, sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation.
Processed products labeled “made with organic
ingredients”
Processed products that contain at least 70 percent
organic ingredients can use the phrase “made
with organic ingredients” and list up to three of the
organic ingredients or food groups on the principal
display panel. For example, soup made with at least
70 percent organic ingredients and only organic
vegetables may be labeled either “soup made with
organic peas, potatoes, and carrots,” or “soup made
with organic vegetables.”
Processed products labeled “made with organic
ingredients” cannot be produced using excluded
methods, sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation. The
percentage of organic content and the certifying
agent seal or mark may be used on the principal
display panel. However, the USDA seal cannot be
used anywhere on the package.
Processed products that contain less than 70 percent
organic ingredients
These products cannot use the term organic
anywhere on the principal display panel. However,
they may identify the specific ingredients that are
organically produced on the ingredients statement on
the information panel.
Other labeling provisions:
Any product labeled as organic must identify each
organically produced ingredient in the ingredient
statement on the information panel.
The name of the certifying agent of the final product
must be displayed on the information panel. The
address of the certifying agent of the final product
may be displayed on the information panel.
There are no restrictions on use of other truthful
labeling claims such as “no drugs or growth hormones
used,” “free range,” or “sustainably harvested.”
Penalties for misuse of labels
A civil penalty of up to $11,000 can be levied on
any person who knowingly sells or labels as organic
a product that is not produced and handled in
accordance with the National Organic Program’s
regulations.

USDA Certified Organic Basics - Thanks To Badger Certified Organic Healthy Body Care

  • The National Organic Program (NOP) was created in 1990 after congress passed the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) to ensure that agricultural products marketed as “Organic” would meet consistent and uniform standards.
  • A certified organic product is made from ingredients grown and processed without chemical fertilizers, growth hormones, GMOs, or synthetic pesticides. The product must meet minimum criteria for production, handling, processing, labeling, and certification standards in order to make any claims regarding USDA organic certification.
  • The USDA Organic Program has four categories for certification, all available for personal care products:

    1. 100% Organic: A product must contain 100% organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt) and may prominently display the USDA organic seal and the percentage.
    2. Organic: A product must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt), and may prominently display the USDA organic seal. The remaining percent must be organically grown if commercially available or consist of a non-agricultural substance that is on the USDA Organic approved ingredient list.
    3. Made with Organic Ingredients: A product must contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). The products may not display the USDA Organic seal but may highlight up to three organic ingredients.
    4. Less than 70% Organic Ingredients: A product contains organically grown ingredients, but may not use the term “Organic” unless specifically listing USDA certified organic ingredients on the back panel. The USDA organic seal may not be displayed.

Essentia: The World's First & Only 100% ALL NATURAL Memory Foam Mattresses!

7:29 AM
Before You Read This Article, Go Here!

Essentia Is the First Company To Make A True Memory Foam Mattress That is Made Entirely of 100% Natural, Non-Toxic Ingredients and Materials. Because so many people have fallen in love with the comfort of Memory Foam, there had to be an All Natural answer in the Mattress World to this problem. Until now, there was no way to make a memory foam mattress without using an array of toxic adhesives, chemicals, flame retardants and compounds. Essentia has a patented technology which was years in the making, that allows them to replicate the comfort and feel of a memory foam mattress without using any thing other than 100% Natural Materials. Read below in an Interview with Dave Spittal of Essentia to see how they make this happen. This is currently the only mattress we recommend on our site.

Tell us about the impact our mattresses have on the planet and our health (feel free to make this your longest answer; I can split the answer into two.)

The planet

The mattress industry is not known for its earth-friendly habits. The manufacturing process itself is very wasteful and generates significant pollution. And unfortunately, the most commonly used materials in mattress production are polyurethane foam and synthetic fibers. Polyurethane is a combination of crude oil, natural gas, sodium chloride, blowing agents and chemical stabilizers. The synthetic fibers often contain formaldehyde and other toxins such as perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) used as a stain repellant. The typical mattress is used for 8 years, and then it is thrown into a landfill where it will stay for thousands of years.

In stark contrast, Essentia uses all natural materials such as organic essential oils, natural latex and organic cotton covers. We also make a point of practicing only the most sustainable and least wasteful manufacturing processes possible. Essentia even compresses and roll packs every mattress in order to reduce our transportation-related carbon footprint. And because we use only the highest quality natural materials, our mattresses are extremely durable with a life expectancy of up to 30 years. At the end of its long life an Essentia mattress will biodegrade in just a few years. Essentia is simply the most planet-friendly mattress available.

Our health

There are countless well documented positive health effects that result from getting a good night’s sleep. And therefore sleeping on a high quality pressure relieving mattress such as memory foam is essential for good health. However, there is growing awareness that toxic “out-gassing” from the materials in mattresses themselves cause adverse health effects. In particular, potential carcinogens and reproductive toxins found in chemical flame retardants and polyurethane foam are accumulating in our bodies as we sleep. In July 2007, a new stringent fire safety law was passed, after which most mattress manufacturers started using low cost flame retardants such as Formaldehyde, Boric acid (a pesticide) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE’s) in order to meet these standards. Shockingly a law that was meant to protect people has had the unintended result of exposing millions to these dangerous chemicals.

Essentia, stands alone because we use only non-toxic natural materials in our memory foam. We also approach the fire proofing standards differently. Instead of finding the least expensive method (soaking the materials in toxic chemicals), Essentia found an alternative non-toxic fabric that meets the federal standards. While this method is slightly more expensive, our customers breathe easier, and sleep better, knowing that their beds are completely toxin free.

What makes Essentia mattresses green?

Essentia is the only manufacturer of natural memory foam in the world.
Our eco-friendly mattress components, such as natural latex rubber, plant extracts and organic essential oils, only enhance the comfort provided by Essentia mattresses. Made with 100% natural latex, Essentia's natural memory foam has all the benefits of memory foam without the toxic ingredients.

All Essentia memory foam mattresses and pillows are individually handmade using the finest raw materials to ensure the highest quality sleep product on the market.

How did the green technology of Essentia mattresses come about?

Jack Dell’Accio the company’s founder had a family member was diagnosed with cancer. Physicians made him aware of the toxins in every day items like TVs, microwaves, couches and dashboards.
His family had been in the latex foam business for years and supplied most major brands. Jack studied the industry and realized that mattresses were manufactured with poor quality components, filled with toxic foams treated with harsh chemicals and layered together with glue.

In looking for alternatives he realized there weren't any. He decided to research and developed something different, a foam made from natural ingredients. he tried offering this foam to major mattress brands but most weren't interested because of the high cost. Those who did buy it only integrated an insignificant amount in order to promote the foam's natural qualities.

As he evaluated brand after brand he realized the industry wasn't overly concerned about consumer health or product quality, just catch phrases and profit margins.

That's when Jack founded Essentia, more than a brand; a commitment to comfort and quality, without compromise

You have different models. What are the differences?

By using different layers of natural memory foam and latex, we are able to create mattresses with differing feels and firmnesses.

Where can people go locally to “try out” one of your green mattresses.

We have a showroom at 10 Stage Door Rd. in Fishkill, NY. , displays in the Danbury Fair Mall and Jefferson Valley Mall. Women’s Work on Main Street in Cold Spring NY also has a mattress on display.

Warning: Memory Foam Mattresses Are Toxic!

4:52 PM

Before You Read This Article, Go Here!

Do You know what dirty little secrets the mattress industry are keeping from you? Do you have any idea what materials are used in making Memory Foam Mattresses? The mattress industry is very unique in that they don't have to disclose the exact contents of their materials, ever! As long as they put a tag on it that says 100% New Materials, and Flame Retardant, they can stick whatever they feel like in their mattresses! Don't you find this a bit alarming? Why don't they have to be accountable and transparent? They are, after all, selling something that people will spend 1/3 of their lives on, with their bodies in full contact to, and their faces pressed up against. How is it that for all of these years the mattress industry doesn't have to own up to anyone? With most mattresses coming from China now, the accountability is even lower and the flame retardants can be comprised of any number of different chemicals and different quantities! Don't ask the companies though, they don't even know! It would take a third party laboratory to tell you the truth!

It is very interesting what the Mattress industry doesn't want you to know and what they hope you will never ask about. One of the leading Memory Foam Mattress companies which has built a name for itself portraying peaceful bliss and relaxing comfort in all of their marketing campaigns, is hoping that you never find out the very frightening facts behind the manufacturing of their mattresses. How could a mattress be toxic, when after all, the commercials show a lovely couple relaxing outside on a cliff above the ocean? They are hoping that you won't notice the toxic fumes emitting from the bed for up to 1 year after buying your mattress. They are also hoping that you don't ask what specific Flame Retardant chemicals are used to "protect" you in case your mattress erupts into flames. They also don't tell you about the way chemicals break down over time and do something called "off gassing" which emit toxic chemicals into the very air that you are breathing in while your head and nose are pressed up against it. They also don't mention how your skin absorbs these chemicals night after night, year after year. So, we will.

Unless you take the time to research, read and investigate for yourself, it is very hard to get straight facts from Memory Foam Manufacturers. In fact, they will all tell you a different story as far as the process they use in making their mattresses. Ever since Tempurpedic proved to have an extremely popular product, all of the mattress companies have jumped on the bandwagon and have tried to emulate memory foam mattresses. "Space Technology" sure was a great selling slogan for the last several years, but it isn't until you realize just how toxic this space technology really is until you realize it's better being on dry land. Sure the quality of memory foam varies from company to company, and the old adage, "you get what you pay for" rings true in most situations, but not this one. When it comes to memory foam mattress safety, the they are priced in ascending order. Inexpensive being Extremely Toxic and Expensive being Very Toxic. It's interesting too, because most people have no idea that the extremely pricey mattress they are buying is probably gong to be the most toxic piece of furniture ever introduced into their home! So, if you are reading this and are wondering what to do because memory foam mattresses are so unbelievably comfortable, don't worry. We are going to help you!

How Dangerous Is Botox? What Doctor's Don't Want You To Know!

6:54 AM
Please Go Here First To Read This Eye Opening (no pun intended) Article!

As someone who recently turned 40, I am all too aware of the fact that most of my friends, often 10 years younger than me, have started getting Botox on a regular basis. Living in South Florida just adds to the pressure women feel to look as young and wrinkle-free for as long as possible. I have conversations with women my age all the time, who have not one wrinkle on their face. As I look at them I wonder, how long can they keep going like this? Do they look more youthful? Perhaps. However I wonder why so few women question the long term effects of what Botox is actually doing to their bodies. I find it fascinating that if their Dr. tells them it's perfectly safe, then they just blindly trust that it must be safe! Here is just one article I located, out of dozens, that questions the actual long-term safety of Botox.

Botox gives more than a frozen face, it can damage your brain

Botox can damage the brain, may spread from face to nervous system.

14 April, 2008

Doing a facelift by injecting the popular wrinkle eraser botulinum neurotoxin type A commonly known as Botox can be injurious to the brain. Update: FDA demands black box warnings on Botox, Dysport due to risk of toxin spreading to other parts of the body. (2/05/09)

Botulinum toxin, one of the most poisonous substances in the world, was approved for commercial use in 1989.

Botox injections work by temporarily paralysing facial muscles, reducing the contractions that cause new wrinkles and ironing out existing ones. The botulinum toxin cuts off communication between nerve cells by destroying a protein named SNAP-25. This disruption paralyses the muscles controlled by the nerve cells, and these paralysing properties allow doctors to treat some diseases such as strabismus, or crossed eyes.

Plastic surgeons also use small doses to paralyze facial muscles, thereby making lines and wrinkles less visible.

While this non- scalpel cosmetic procedure was once used only by celebrities and the wealthy, Botox injections are now available in the United Kingdom from cosmetic surgeons and beauticians for as little as 99.

Recent research, conducted by Italian researchers and published in the latest issue of The Journal of Neuroscience, suggests that the deadly poison in Botox may actually spread from the face to the central nervous system after it is injected into the skin.

Botox injections are one of the one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the United Kingdom.

When researchers from the Italian National Research Councils Institute of Neuroscience injected botulinum toxin into the faces of rats, it was found that the drug moved away from the site of the injection, to be detected just days later in the stem cells in the brain. The poison, which was present in the brain of rats even six months later, was also able to travel from one region of the brain to another.

Matteo Caleo, who led the study wrote in The Journal of Neuroscience: We suspect that this spread is a common occurrence after toxin delivery, adding that even minute quantities of botulinum toxin are enough to interfere with nerve signalling elsewhere in the body.

The website independent.co.uk named celebrities such as Sir Cliff Richard, X Factor judges Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne, and Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher as having admitted to taking Botox injections.

The latest findings on the hazards of Botox injections come two months after the drug was blamed for 16 deaths in the United States. These deaths are believed to have occurred when Botox, used to treat muscle spasms, travelled from the site of injection to other parts of the body, weakening, in turn, the muscles used for breathing or swallowing.

The results of the new research is likely to be used a as powerful weapon by campaigners who clamour for stricter regulations on Botox, according to independent.co.uk

However, many practitioners who administer Botox injections have questioned the significance of the latest findings.

The website quoted Dr Douglas McGeorge, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, as saying: There is no chance that this could happen to a human. Botox is a poison, and a single unit of botulism is a 50% lethal dose for a white mouse, but it is very different for human beings. The doses (used here) are relatively much smaller and it has much more local effects.

If used appropriately, Dr Douglas McGeorge added, Botox is a wonderful drug, and you are much more likely to encounter problems from injecting it into the wrong area than from it migrating anywhere.

Being a comparatively new treatment, knowledge of the long-term side-effects of Botox injections are limited, but droopy eyelids and expressionless frozen faces are common.

Why Is Belly Fat So Dangerous?

Blood Test Warns of Dangerous 'Deep Belly' Fat

This type of fat around organs boosts health risks, researchers say.

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

Mar. 23

THURSDAY, July 12 (HealthDay News) -- A protein in blood points to rising amounts of a particularly lethal form of body fat around organs, scientists say.

As levels of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) rise, so do levels of "inter-abdominal fat" linked to an increased risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes, the researchers say.

"Increased inter-abdominal fat is known to be associated with cardiovascular risk," said study co-author Dr. Barbara B. Kahn, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston.

Reporting in the July issue of Cell Metabolism, her team noted that increased "deep belly" fat around organs has long been linked to an increased risk for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. "The regulation of this protein may tell us completely new information about what really causes type 2 diabetes," said Kahn, who is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

In the study, the researchers found that the amount of RBP4 in the blood accurately reflected the amount of fat surrounding the abdominal organs. That means that "RBP4 might be able to be used as a marker to indicate cardiovascular risk," Kahn said.

She stressed that RBP4 is not a cause of obesity. However, increased levels appear be associated with this particular type of abdominal-fat obesity.

In the study, Kahn and colleagues looked at biopsy samples of abdominal fat from 196 people. They found that more RBP4 is made in visceral (deep belly) fat compared with the subcutaneous fat that lies just beneath the skin. In addition, blood levels of RBP4 are greater in people who are obese. These people have double or triple the amount of RBP4 compared with normal-weight people.

"The gene expression of RBP4 is increased more in visceral adipose [fat] tissue -- the adipose tissue surrounding the internal organs -- than it is in the subcutaneous adipose tissue," Kahn said. So, levels of RBP4 are higher in people who have a so-called "visceral pattern" of obesity compared with people that have a subcutaneous pattern of obesity, she said.

In earlier research, Kahn's team also found that the levels of RBP4 were elevated in people with insulin resistance, people who are obese, and people with type 2 diabetes. This was also the case in healthy people with a family history of diabetes.

According to Kahn, there's ongoing research into drugs that could lower RBP4 levels.

But there's another tried-and-true means of lowering RBP4, she added.

"Levels can also be regulated by physical exercise," Kahn said. In prior research, her team showed that "people who benefited from an exercise program lowered their levels of serum RBP4 when they got more insulin-sensitive," she said.

Kahn had also shown in earlier research that teens who went on a low-carbohydrate diet along with an exercise program lowered their RBP4 levels.

One expert thinks that lowering RBP4 levels might help treat heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

"This study suggests that RBP4 can be a good biomarker to quantify visceral adiposity, which is closely linked to metabolic syndrome," said Dr. Tae-Hwa Chun, from the Department of Internal Medicine, Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Michigan. "This article also supports the notion that all the fats are not equal in their functions."

In experiments with mice, RBP4 decreases insulin sensitivity of muscle and liver tissue, which is considered a precursor to diabetes, Chun said.

"It is still not clear whether RBP4 regulates insulin sensitivity by controlling retinoic acid metabolism or by directly acting on muscle or liver cells," Chun said. "The drug Fenretinide, which is shown to lower RBP4 levels, has been already used as a chemotherapeutic agent for cancer. The side effects of the drug, however, need to be carefully weighed against its possible benefit for metabolic diseases."

In another report published in the same issue of the journal, a research team led by Bruce Spiegelman of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston identified a gene called PRDM16 that regulates the production of so-called "brown fat" in mice. Brown fat is a type of fat that actually generates heat and counters obesity caused by overeating.

"Brown fat is present in mice and in human infants, where it keeps them warm by dissipating food energy as heat, instead of storing it as 'white' fat," Spiegelman said in a prepared statement. "Human adults don't have much brown fat, but there is some, and from a therapeutic perspective, the question is whether that pathway can be reactivated."

The researchers hope their discovery will lead to new ways of treating obesity in humans.

Do Doctors Receive Gifts and Money From Pharmaceutical Companies?

Vermont passes sunshine law limiting drug company gifts to doctors

Chris Hendel, associate director, Health & Family Consumer Reports
Vermont, my home state and a bellwether for transparency reform in health care, just passed a law that goes further than any other in the nation. It limits drug company gifts to physicians and requires transparency for payments made to them by the pharmaceutical industry

These are important reforms. In 2008 the pharmaceutical industry reported spending nearly $3 million on payments to the state’s doctors, hospitals, universities, among others, according to Vermont’s attorney general. And such expenditures have been shown to have an influence on the drugs you’re prescribed.

A recent report from the Institute of Medicine found that the drug company practice of giving doctors gifts and meals, along with other financial incentives, may influence physicians to prescribe a specific drug when another drug might be more beneficial to the patient. And another recent study published in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine, found that even small gifts, like the pharmaceutical industry’s ubiquitous pens and coffee cups, can have an implicit effect on the attitude of medical students toward the drug that it’s branded with.

The Vermont law signed this week by Governor Jim Douglas, bans drug companies—and manufacturers of medical devices and biological products, such as vaccines—from paying for gifts, including meals and travel, to physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, pharmacists, and health plan administrators. Any allowable payments drug companies make to doctors, such as those for legitimate educational purposes, will be posted in a database on a public website maintained by the Vermont Attorney General. Information should be available starting in 2011.

The new law also closes loopholes that led to poor compliance of previous Vermont transparency legislation enacted in 2002. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that under the earlier law, 61 percent of payments by drug companies were not released to the public, and 75 percent of disclosed payments were missing information needed to identify the recipient.

The public appears to be quite supportive of such disclosure efforts. A Consumer Reports poll from earlier this year, found that 68 percent of Americans thought that drug companies have too much influence on the drugs that doctors prescribe, and 47 percent said that prescriptions are influenced by gifts from the pharmaceutical industry.

Conflict of interest and sunshine reforms help to limit the influence of drug companies on the treatments that patients are prescribed. And once consumers get a glimpse of sunshine, it tends to spread. Last year, the industry trade group, PhRMA, saw the light and updated its marketing code to recommend against using promotional items, like pens and coffee cups, restaurant meals and other perceived conflicts of interest. But those recommendations are voluntary. Several other states, including California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, have disclosure legislation already, and a federal sunshine bill covering drug company gifts is in the works in Congress.

But in an editorial released Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, Robert Steinbrook, M.D., argues that the pending federal law, The Physician Payments Sunshine Act, proposed by Senator Chuck Grassley, (R-Iowa), needs to be strengthened in order to live up to the standards set by the Vermont law—or else it may preempt stronger state laws. “The Sunshine Act would not,” writes Dr. Steinbrook, “ban gifts and some payments, or cover recipients other than doctors, as Vermont’s law does. By enacting the strictest gift ban and disclosure law in the country, Vermont has raised the bar for voluntary and legislative reform efforts.”

Chris Hendel, associate director, Health & Family Consumer Reports

We are printing 2 separate comments from 2 different Drs who read this article, below:

Drug money—and the price you could be paying

Dr. John Santa discusses the financial relationships between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry.

What’s wrong with promoting prescription drugs to doctors?

If you notice a lot of pens and scratch pads in your doctor’s office with logos on them, if you’re frequently offered free samples or often notice drug company "detailers" in the waiting room, you may be more likely to be treated with a new brand-name drug when an older standby would be just as good, cheaper, and maybe even safer. Free drug samples can end up costing more in the long run because eventually a prescription has to be written for that expensive drug. Those logos are very effective for brand-name recall. You might want to ask about your doctor’s policy on seeing drug representatives. I used to work in a big practice where about one-quarter of the doctors regularly saw drug representatives. They were more likely to prescribe the latest and most expensive drugs. But that’s just the start of the substantial and influential financial relationships between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry.

What more is there?

Physicians could virtually exist on the free meals delivered to their offices on a daily basis if they wanted to. One pharma detailer wrote an article about setting up a latte cart to get her foot in the door; doctors were more than happy to exchange a few minutes of their time for a free latte. Or you get invited to dinner at a nice restaurant for a "medical education" speech, and at the end of the night are handed an envelope with $100 inside. Or you participate in "research" that drug companies farm out to doctor’s offices. You don't have to do anything except follow their protocol, and they'll pay you $300 or $400 for every patient you put in the study. Doctors deny it, but the evidence is clear that these financial relationships lead to significant increases in prescribing and sales. If they didn't, the drug companies wouldn’t spend an estimated $20 billion a year on them.

Have you ever taken drug money?

I am sorry to say I agreed once to participate on an "advisory committee." A company had a new drug for dementia that it was marketing heavily. The meeting was in Vail, Colo., over spring break. The company flew my wife and me there and put us up in the best hotel. We got wined and dined, and all amenities were paid for by the company. But I left feeling compromised and decided I was never going to do that again, and I haven't. Drug companies should not be allowed to give gifts to practitioners, which just adds to already inflated drug costs.

John Santa, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of medicine at Portland State University and former medical director of the Drug Effectiveness Review Project in Oregon

I'm a general internal medicine physician. This entire discussion is malarky. I have never known and can't imagine a doctor being influenced by anything any drug company or drug rep does or doesn't do. We view all drug reps with a skeptical eye and recognize that their job is to promote a product and not provide us with objective information. In contrast to our politicians in Washington, who seem to be on the dole from every interest group in America, physicians are quite ethical and take very seriously our obligation to put our patient's welfare before anything else. In contrast to what is implied by the CR article and comments above it is in fact politicians who, in contrast to doctors, actually DO accept money for favors. To Etox above, who seems to delight that doctors may not get any more "fancy dinners" (do I detect a hint of jealousy?): I've never been to a drug company "fancy dinner." I spend so much time taking care of patients that as soon as I can get away I make a bee line home to spend a little time with my family before getting back on the hamster wheel the next day.

Do You Know How Safe Your Supplements Are?

1:39 PM
Are they Safe?
Where Do The Ingredients Come From?
Do You Know How They Are Made?

These are questions we wanted to find the answers to and we managed to. But First, isn't it interesting how our entire culture is obsessed with finding easy cures and fixes to everything? If a pill can make it all better, then why not take it? We seem to be transferring our blind faith in the pharmaceutical industry over to the supplement industry. Have you ever paused to think about how this is just as dangerous for our health? The alternative and natural health practitioners and advocates have long been huge supporters of vitamin and herbal supplements and it is only in the last 20 years or so that the traditional medical establishment has been coming around to the theories that vitamin supplementation just might be the missing link after all when it comes to disease prevention and cure. It is not uncommon to now find traditional MD's "subscribing" supplements to their patients to help treat a myriad of chronic conditions. Especially after patients have become more vocal in their desire to avoid pharmaceutical prescriptions. It all sounds great doesn't it? After all, many of us have been waiting a long time to see a more mainstream acceptance of alternative therapies and treatments.

But wait a minute. Are we just transferring our blind acceptance from one industry to another? After all, there has been plenty of negative hype surrounding the greedy, often corrupt pharmaceutical industry. This must mean that the supplement industry is only made up of completely well-intentioned, decent, holistically oriented individuals looking out for our health and well being, right?

So should we be taking the next greatest supplement because we saw the glossy ad in our favorite magazine touting it's benefits or because we read the latest "health research" saying it would prevent everything from a to z? There are now studies showing that people who eat diets high in fatty fish statistically have less heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's, that means we should all be taking our daily dose of fish oil, right? After all, that's what all the "studies" say, don't they? Take your fish oil, and you too could prevent the onslaught of heart disease and Alzheimer's. It is all this simple right? (Cue the sound of screeching brakes now!)

In the following article written by Jordan Rubin listed below, you will find a detailed explanation of why Whole Foods supplements, if you are going to take any, should be the only kind you take.

The Case for Whole Food

Nutritional Supplements

by Dr. Jordan Rubin, NMD, PhD

As with any area of health and wellness, there are differing schools of thought and philosophies; nutritional supplementation is no different. Historically, the older school of thought on nutritional supplementations dates back to the 1930s, during which time there was emphasis on the utilization of whole food concentrates as a source of essential nutrients. Concentrated foods such as wheat and barley grass were considered our first multivitamins; these grasses and their juices are "mainstay" health drinks even today, and are seeing a resurgence of interest.

The "modern paradigm" of nutritional supplementation came as chemical scientists claimed they could replicate these natural-growing miracle foods' nutrients in their laboratories. This trend superceded the "old school" paradigm of nutritional supplementation. With the advent of scientific technology, individual nutrients such as betacarotene, ascorbic acid, and alphatocopherol could not only be identified in the whole food matrix, but could also be scientifically crafted as simplified imitations of the "real thing" -created through synthetic means.

Such "breakthroughs" led to the modern multiple vitamin and mineral formulas that utilize, for the most part, isolated or synthetic vitamins and minerals created in the laboratory. These types of formulas rely on USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) nutrients. These are pulled or isolated from their natural cofactors and are often synthesized like pharmaceuticals. If sufficient cofactors are not supplied - such as other vitamins, minerals, and enzymes - then the body might not be able to use them. These nutrient isolates or USP vitamins and minerals are sometimes combined with food concentrates and herbs. This might be an improvement, but still inferior to the "old school" ways.

Recent studies indicate that the "old school" ways are far superior to the "modern paradigm"; Nature's design should not be altered or "replicated." Irrefutably, nutrition is best gleaned from whole foods; however, when nutritional supplementation is needed, then whole food nutritional supplements offer the greatest nutritional integrity. Isolated or synthetic supplements are sub-optimal, many times ineffective, and can even be detrimental to health.

With nearly 70% of our population taking one or more supplements, mostly in the form of multivitamins, it is important to understand what these nutrients do in the body. Vitamins are extremely complex organic substances necessary for human life and metabolic processes - for growth, maintenance, and health. The body is not capable of producing these vitamins on its own; they must be obtained from foods and are integral parts of the nutritive compounds infused in the whole food. They are sometimes considered singular substances, but each vitamin is actually a "group of chemically related compounds." By separating the vitamin "group" into single, incomplete vitamin portions, the vitamin is then converted from "a physiological, biochemical, active micronutrient into a disabled, debilitated chemical of little or no value to living cells."

For example, the body can selectively choose to absorb and assimilate exactly what it needs from whole foods/whole food concentrates containing whole nutritional complexes, and excrete the rest. The antithesis of this "selective absorption" mechanism occurs when the body is given fractionated, isolated, or synthetic vitamins; the body is coerced to manage the influx of vitamins and the results can be chemical imbalances or toxic overdose. Most vitamins in foods are directly or indirectly products of plants; exceptions include vitamin D - produced in adequate amounts by the body when utilizing ultraviolet light from the sun (in measured quantities). They are also found in organ meats and dairy fat from grass-fed animals, and vitamin B12 - produced by fungi, soil microorganisms, and some bacteria, as well as animal foods including meats, dairy, and eggs. Normally, intestinal bacteria produce a needed portion of vitamin K, and other B complex factors - if the healthy intestinal bacteria are functioning properly.

Whole Foods Defined

Properly grown and prepared whole foods are still the primary sources of virtually all vitamins; however, whole food nutritional supplements - derived from whole foods - organically grown, nutrientdense, minimally processed at low temperatures, and made "body ready" for quick "selective" absorption and assimilation - rank second. Whole foods are real foods complete with all natural nutrients and other important compounds, and have not been highly processed, synthesized, or irradiated.

The word "whole" is a derivation of the Greek root "holon," meaning "a single organism" and "the entire universe"; these can "stand alone," or perform a dual role by becoming synergistic entities woven together, forming the whole. The word "food" is derived from the Old English word "fode," meaning "to foster, to nourish, and to encourage growth." Therefore, "whole foods" denotes that their roots are founded in an integrated universe whose foods contain the spectrum of essential, synergistic nutrients that, when consumed, foster a balanced, complete nutrition.

Our society, however, "processes" its whole foods much like it has fractionated its nutritional supplements - leaving them void of essential nutrients. It has refined whole grains so that the germ, bran, and other vitamin-rich portions are removed. Food preparation and "sterilization" processes such as pasteurization destroys many of the vitamins in the foods; adulteration of foods comes with additives, chlorine, fluoride, etc. Farming methodologies detract from nutritional wholeness of foods; chemical fertilizers, pesticides, crop limitation, overuse of fields - make the soil incapable of producing nutritious, vitamin-laden foods. Add air pollution, water pollution, and our stress-filled lifestyles - all depletors of vitamins and minerals and it is clear that our society cannot be receiving optimal nutrition.

To clarify the difference between whole foods and processed foods, and whole food nutritional supplements versus the average, adulterated, isolated, synthetic supplements, let's "dissect" whole, unrefined grains. Whole, unrefined grains contain three main parts: the germ - or sprouting part of the grain; the endosperm-containing starch to support the young sprout during its early stages; and the bran - the protective layer encasing the sprout and its endosperm. In a "whole grain food," all three parts of the grain must be resident; in a processed/refined food, the germ and the bran are removed, leaving only the starchy endosperm. This is merely a fraction of the intended natural benefit of whole grains.

Each part of the whole grain serves a different purpose and adds a different completing nutrient. The germ is rich in micronutrients to support the young sprout and contains high levels of vitamin E, as well as the majority of the 13-vitamins and other nutrients. The protective bran contains multiple micronutrients intended to protect the young sprout from environmental damage, and these same molecules protect the consumer of whole grains. Additionally, the bran contains over 60% of the minerals in grains, and is high in fiber. The endosperm - the primary component of white bread - contains some vitamins and minerals, but is comprised primarily of starch - contributing calories and little nutritional value to consumers.

The problem with processed foods is similar to the problem with synthetic, isolated supplements - they lack "wholeness" and cannot reach the potency level of whole foods or whole food nutritional supplements. They simply are not intrinsically equipped to do so.

Whole Food Nutritional Supplements versus Synthetic Supplements

A vitamin is a complex mechanism of biological, functional, interrelated, interdependent components. It consists of not only the organic nutrients identified as the vitamin, but also enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, and trace element activators. Since enzymes are proteins, they must contain amino acids and trace minerals. Enzyme activators may include trace elements such as manganese, cobalt, zinc, copper, molybdenum, selenium, vanadium, etc. These components are effective only when left in the proper organic state.

Nutritional supplements, then, should not be individual chemicals or combined chemicals. Supplements must be food concentrates - intact, integrated, with their vitamin complexes incorporated - in order to retain their functional and nutritional integrity. Altering the natural state of food concentrates will literally take the "life" out them - leaving them "dead" -as a synthetic, isolated, adulterated supplement.

Live, natural complexes usually exist as enzymes or coenzymes; they contain live vitamins, organic minerals, and other vital, functional, elements organized by the sun, rain, water, soil's nutrients, and living bacteria. Heat, pasteurization, and steam sterilization destroy enzymes and enzyme activators; supplements produced utilizing any of these procedures are not vitamin complexes. Hence, the synthetic vitamin, once separated from its protein component, biologically loses its function. Chemically-pure, isolated, synthetic vitamins are devoid of all their synergists - the factors which enable biochemical operation and action.

Synthetic vitamin fractions are mirror image duplicates (enantiomers) of only a portion of the real, biologically-active, and physiologically-precise nutritional complexes. They may be identical in chemical characteristics, but differ from one another in their structure or configuration; they are mirror-image molecules - opposite "twins" - which act and react in different ways. The enzymes produced by living organisms recognize, bind to, and spur the production of only one enantiomer, leaving the nutrients extracted from plants or animals from nature "enantiomerically pure." Synthetic, isolated vitamins yield products that may be 50:50 mixtures of enantiomers that are difficult to separate.

Effects of these "evil twins" in synthetic supplements - processed like pharmaceuticals - (as well as some pharmaceuticals) are unpredictable and sometimes damaging. In the case of synthetic drugs, about 75% of those made in the US come in these "mirror image" mixtures. A major producer of synthetic vitamins has been quoted as saying that "sometimes the mirror image is useless, yet often can be poisonous." Such an approach in making drugs (as well as making synthetic or isolated supplements) "equates its construction by having part of it designed for its function, and an equal weight of an isomer, which usually has no therapeutic value, but has the potential to cause unsuspected deleterious side effects." Drugs such as thalidomide, ethambutol, and naproxen are examples of those containing "evil twins." It is difficult to predict how such "mirror images" will affect people.

All whole food complexes contribute specific and definite proportions based on an individual's need for metabolic reactions in life; any imbalance is unwise - if not unhealthy. Synthetic supplement pills are inherently unbalanced biochemistry. For example, the use of ascorbic acid supplements - comprised of high amounts of a single part of the vitamin C complex - ignores the fact that the balance is a result of the 150 anti-carcinogens, redox agents, and other phytochemicals present in each fruit and vegetable. Foods contain innumerable substances, some still unknown, that produce a combined effect to which a single ingredient cannot compare.

Another issue in the case for whole food supplement nutrition resides in "potency" factors. "Potency"-derived from the Latin potentia, meaning "power" - indicates the strength, ability or capacity to bring about a result. Vitamin potency is usually measured in milligrams or micrograms, based on test results using isolated vitamin fractions. There are deficiencies due to our depleted soils, and refined, processed foodscreating an imbalance and a need for nutritional supplements. However, in the supposed "high potency" vitamins -chemically-pure portions of vitamin complexes, their use is worse than the deficiency. Synthetic vitamins, especially in excessive quantities, can have drug-like effects and cause the same symptoms that result from their deficiency. The results are drug effects - not nutritional effects - and often reverse nutritive action.

A nutrition fallacy usually embraced is that natural supplements, because they require less to get more results, are not as potent as synthetic supplements. Nothing could be further from the truth. The bottom line is this: A miniscule amount of a vitamin left in its whole food state is tremendously more functional, powerful, and effective nutritionally (more potent) than a large amount of a chemically - pure, synthetic or isolated vitamin. Whole food nutritional supplements contain organic micronutrients - nutrients needed in minute quantities in order to accomplish large biochemical functions. Furthermore, the body treats synthetic supplements as toxins- rushing the "nonfood" item through the circulatory system to the kidneys, in order to be excreted.

Since potency refers to effectiveness, whole food nutritional supplements contain true high potency because they remain intact with natural synergists found in unrefined foods. Synthetic, isolated supplements are less potent - less able to effectively nourish the human body.

Living Nutrients/Homeostatic Nutrients

As mentioned earlier, whole food nutritional supplements are "alive," while synthetic, isolated, or adulterated supplements are "dead." Also, the idea of nutritional "balance" is imperative; any imbalance is unwise, if not unhealthy. Synthetic supplements cannot offer "balance" or homeostasis; however, the utilization of living homeostatic nutrients in the preparation of whole food nutritional supplements offers the balance that is necessary.

Effective whole food nutritional supplements will utilize homeostatic nutrient complexes, vitamins and minerals which are liberated and "potentiated" - made potent by probiotic microorganisms and their byproducts including enzymes and organic acids. As with the complex structure of whole foods, the result is not simply "mixing" but alchemy. The process of turning ordinary vitamins and minerals into living "whole food" structures is called "organic transmutation." This is the same process that is used by nature to convert inorganic nutrients in the soil into the organic, ionized and charged nutrients we consume in healthy foods. Organic, plant-derived vitamins and minerals are able to be safely used by the body because nature has acted upon them and transformed them into organic material, rather than allowing them to remain in their elemental form. These nutrients literally become part of the whole food complex.

In exceptional whole food nutritional supplements, great care is taken to ensure products from whole foods which are organically-grown, nutrient-dense, minimally processed at low temperature, and are made "body ready" for quick absorption and assimilation. Therefore, optimal potency is ensured; the designed potential is reached and the desired target is hit. One's nutritional state relies on what the body absorbs and assimilates, not only what it ingests. Therefore, "body ready" supplements composed of living homeostatic nutrient complexes through enzymatic fermentation, contain all the requisite co-factors for proper absorption and utilization.

Lafe's Natural & Organic Products

What goes ON your body goes IN your body, a message Lafe's has been spreading for many years. Long before being green was the 'IN' thing, Lafes was formulating Organic, Natural products for adults and babies. Since 1992 Lafe's has been known for totally natural and organic products. What started out as a small Natural Deodorant business slowly evolved into a full line of almost Certified Organic Baby products as well.

With Lafe's new line of baby products, they have raised the bar on their high standards to unprecedented new levels. Not only are these products at least 95 percent certified organic, but they are also packaged in plastic free of estrogenic activity. This baby-safe, EA-free plastic addresses the concerns recently raised by consumers over Bisphenol A and creates a higher standard to safeguard against chemicals that trigger endocrine disruption.

Read More About Lafes Here: Lafe worked as an advocate for social change - from equal housing to voting rights. The work involved teaching empowerment skills to low and moderate income families to assert their political rights with respect to issues around social justice and equality. Lafe worked in South Dakota, Arkansas, York and Texas with various different advocacy projects. Although the selling of ideas and concepts was very rewarding, pay was meager and didn't sustain a young family. Lafe decided to apply those same skills in the private sector. The move to marketing products that empower people to take charge of their health and wellness was a natural transition.

With the growing holistic health movement, Lafe began representing a line of supplements, Chinese herbs, essential oils and natural personal care products. In 1992, with a $15,000 family loan, Lafe launched Discount Deodorant Stones offering a variety of natural deodorants. As demand grew, Lafe soon realized that offering the purest, highest quality ingredients meant he needed more control over product integrity. In 1997, he began his own manufacturing operation - based exclusively in the U.S. - using completely natural, organic and paraben-free formulations. With 30% annual growth, across both domestic and international markets, Lafe's Natural Bodycare now offers a wide array of personal care lines including natural deodorants, foot and babycare.

Throughout his many endeavors, Lafe remains steadfast in his commitment to giving back to the world community. Today, through his 1% Project, Lafe donates one percent of his company's profits to support breast cancer prevention and environmental awareness.

As natural and organic becomes more mainstream, and boundaries of what's truly natural become blurred - Lafe maintains the highest quality standards. Available online and at leading retail stores, such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats, Lafe's products simplify the complexities of making healthy choices - and empower consumers to choose with confidence.

We are proud to give Lafe's our Seal of Approval. Look for Lafe's in our soon to be published Shopping Guide!

Johnson & Johnson and Palmer's Cocoa Butter Are Still Putting Toxic Ingredients In Their Skin Care Products!

7:30 AM
Before You Read This Article Go Here!

Did you know that the leading Baby Product companies are still using toxic ingredients in their most popular products? Johnson & Johnson is one of the most guilty companies around. Even though they are masters at evoking soft, soothing images associated with health and happiness in their multi million dollar ad campaigns, most of their products are filled with chemicals and toxins. Have you read the ingredients to their 'No More Tears Baby Shampoo'.
Ingredients: Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4. May also contain: Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide. Do you know what any of these chemicals are? Can you even pronounce them? Do any of them sound like they are from nature? Are you bathing your baby with this? Look up the definition of these ingredients, you may be in for quite a shock!
You should really ask yourself if you would eat any of these ingredients, because if the answer is 'no', then you most certainly shouldn't be putting it on you or your baby! Obviously, they aren't the only company guilty of this.

One of the most popular Pregnancy Creams, Palmers Cocoa Butter Cream, which is advertised as helping to prevent stretch marks and sooth itchy skin has a laundry list of toxic ingredients in it! Cocoa butter is actually one of the last ingredients on the label! Ingredients:
Deionized Water. Cocoa Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Propylene Glycol - petroleum derivative that acts as a solvent, surfactant, and wetting agent; easily penetrates the skin, and can weaken protein and cellular structure; penetrates the skin so quickly that the EPA warns factory workers to avoid skin contact, to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities; used to remove barnacles from boats.
Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Mineral Oil - a heavy oil; by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline; does not penetrate the skin but instead leaves a residue and coats the skin like plastic, clogging pores and interfering with the skin releasing toxins; causes premature aging and skin irritation; some tests have shown it may be cancer causing {and to think we slather this all over babies -- Baby Oil is nothing more than mineral oil with fragrance added to it}.
Stearalkonium Chloride - chemical frequently used in personal hair care products, Cetyl Alcohol, Cocoa Butter - provided it is unrefined, this is good; however, if it's refined, it has been stripped of all it's good qualities; {I'm guessing they use refined because if it was organic, they would say so}, Palm Oil,
Petrolatum, - Okay, what can I say? This one is pretty self-explanatory; petrolatum is another word for petroleum jelly; you should know what petroleum means...yes, you are slatering yet another petroleum product all over your skin!!!
Dimethicone -
natural silicone used as a skin-conditioning agent; helps reduce evaporation of water from the skin's surface and helps maintain the water content of the skin, Fragrance - this one is anybody's guess as they don't say what it is; if it's not essential oils, then it's synthetic and not natural so that wonderful chocolate smell just might be from a fragrance and not an ingredient. PEG 8 Stearate - chemical used in cosmetics and toothpaste to form emulsions, which it does by reducing surface tension in the substances of which an emulsified form is required.
Methylparaben - Parabens have been linked to estrogen-based cancer!!! Strong evidence of skin toxicity causing irritation and sensitivity; tests have shown mutation in vitro test; respiratory, brain and nervous system effects and interferes with gene expression., Tocopheryl Acetate - Vitamin E; this antioxidant helps block lipid peroxidation in cells and tissues; it will help neutralize free radicals to prevent and diminish fine lines and wrinkles while it also softens skin and moisturizes from within. {Notice it is the next to LAST ingredient so that means there is probably not enough in the lotion to have any therapeutic value}, Propylparaben -
Parabens have been linked to estrogen-based cancer!!! Evidence of skin, reproductive and developmental toxicity. Is toxic to wildlife and the environment.

Why are these companies still putting known carcinogens and toxins in our skin care products? Why, when over 60% of everything we put on our skin gets directly absorbed into our blood stream? Why, when these companies are well aware of the dozens of safe, natural, effective alternative ingredients available that would make their products even more beneficial? Because they think we won't care, don't care, won't bother to learn more, and that we don't know any better. Well aren't you sick of this? Aren't you sick of thinking that our Government Agencies are protecting us from dangerous chemicals and ingredients when that is the furthest thing from the truth? Aren't you tired of all of the cheap, toxic ingredients allowed to be added to all of our skin care products and foods? When will enough be enough? If you are sick of this, call the companies and let them know you want safe, natural alternative products without chemicals that leach into our food and water supply. Tell them you won't buy any more of their products until they shape up and cut out the toxic chemicals! They have the ability to produce safe products, effective, healthy products and have always known how to do it. They just figure if you still buy it, they will still make it! Your phone call really can make a difference!!

Why Is Drinking Water From Plastic Bottles So Dangerous?

8:19 AM

Most of us know by now that we should try to lessen our consumption of bottled water as much as possible, however many of us do not know all of the reasons for this. Sure we know that plastic bottles are filling up our landfills and that just the process of manufacturing plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air and water supply, but this, my friends, is just the tip of the iceberg!

One of the easiest ways to start eliminating plastic water bottles from your life is to purchase re-usable stainless steel drinking bottles for your and your family. For what you would spend on a few plastic water bottles, you can buy one of these stylish numbers and they will last for years! Just bring them with you where ever you go, and give them to your kids so that you can always be prepared to fill them up! The second easiest thing to do, is to buy an above the sink water filtration system so that you never have to run to the store to buy your bottled water ever again! We will let you in on the importance of shower and bath filters another time:)

Listed below you will find the numerous reasons why you should try to eliminate all plastic bottled water from your life as soon as possible.

1. 60,000,000 (That's Million) plastic bottles are produced, transported and disposed of EVERY DAY in the U.S. alone!

2.
BPA leeches from plastic into your foods and beverages quite easily. And if those containers are old, scratched, worn down from harsh chemicals and dishwashers or heated in a microwave, they are likely leeching even higher levels of BPA than normal. This chemical is so widely used -- industry uses more than 6 billion pounds of BPA a year -- that a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found BPA in the urine of 93 percent of the people they tested. BPA May be linked to:
  • Long-term fertility problems
  • Earlier sexual development in females
  • Decreased sperm count
  • Increases in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and autism
  • Breast and prostate cancers
  • Childhood obesity
3. Bottled water costs more fossil fuels to transport than tap water, and it also takes 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to create enough polyethylene terephthalate plastic to make the bottles. That amount of oil could fuel about 100,000 cars for a year.

4.
In addition, 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter. These bottles can take up to 1,000 years to finally biodegrade.
5.
In some places, water extraction for bottled water has caused water shortages. This problem has occurred in over 50 villages in India, and also in Texas and the Great Lakes region.

6.
As plastic ages or is exposed to heat or stress, it can release trace amounts of some of its ingredients. Of particular concern are bisphenol-a (BPA), used to strengthen some plastics, and phthalates, used to soften others. BPA and phthalates are endocrine disrupters, which mimic hormones. Estrogen and other hormones in relatively tiny amounts can cause vast changes, so researchers worry that BPA and phthalates could do the same, especially in young children.

Here are some more ways to limit your use of plastic products which all helps positively affect our health directly and also our environment as a whole.

From Mercola.Com
1. Boycott plastic shopping bags. Use reusable canvas or cloth varieties instead. (This also applies to the plastic produce bags in the grocery store.)

2. Don’t buy bottled water. Filter your own using a reverse-osmosis filter and put it in a glass bottle. I am going to be helping you in this area soon as my team is just finishing up a glass water bottle that you can use to carry around with you. It is covered with a neoprene sleeve to protect it from breaking and has a easy lid to drink from and is wide enough so you can easily clean the bottle. I hope to have them available in the fall as they are at the factory right now being produced.
3. Avoid using plastic cups, utensils, dishware and food storage containers. If you get a beverage while on-the-go, bring your own cup with you.

4. Buy toys made of natural fabrics instead of plastic.
5. Look for products that use minimal packaging, or buy in bulk.

6. Give up plastic wrap (and never use it to cover your food while it’s heating).

7. Avoid buying canned foods and drinks (the can linings contain plastic chemicals). Try your hand at canning fresh produce at home instead.
8. Parents, use cloth diapers instead of plastic ones.
9. Look for non-plastic home items like cloth shower curtains and wooden spoons instead of plastic ones.

10. If you have pets, use biodegradable bags to clean up after them.

Curcumin And Alzheimer's Disease

3:42 PM
From The UCLA Website:

Curcumin has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal preparation made from turmeric or as turmeric powder used as a preservative and coloring agent in foods (yellow curry powder). Curcumin was isolated as the major yellow pigment in turmeric, a pure chemical (diferulomethane). Curcumin’s structure is similar to other plant pigments called polyphenolics (chemicals containing muliple “phenol” groups) which often have potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and associated health benefits. Many similar plant pigments are known as potent antioxidants, for example, the pigments extracted from grapes in red wine ( resveratrol), or in green tea (catechins) or in fruit juices (blueberries, strawberries, pomegranates etc) typically contain polyphenolic antioxidants and have been studied for their possible medicinal or preventive value.

  • Of the many polyphenolics, curcumin is special for the following reasons:

  • Curcumin is the Asian version of aspirin. Our wonder drug aspirin was originally purifed from willow bark extracts that were used in European and American Indian traditional medicines to control inflammation. Eventually aspirin was synthesized by German chemists and developed by Bayer as one of the most successful drugs in the Western medicine cabinet. Today aspirin is used not only in pain remedies and other analgesic applications, but to control minor fever and inflammation and, at low doses, to prevent heart attack and stroke. Curcumin has been used in traditional Indian (Ayruvedic) and Chinese medicine for thousands of years largely because of its proven efficacy in treating conditions with inflammation. They also used it in foods as an effective food preservative, just as we use synthetic additives like BHA. These ancient civilizations have vast trial and error experience with many different herbal remedies and food preparations and they selected curcumin as a food additive and major tool for medicinal use based on efficacy- not superstition.

  • Curcumin has been developed by the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) and academic investigators around the world as a potent anti-carcinogen. Because of low toxicity and great efficacy in multiple in vitro and in vivo cancer models, curcumin was selected for further development, put through extensive toxicology testing and has successively made it through the first stages (Phase I) of clinical testing abroad and is currently in clinical trials at several sites in the U.S. All of this work by many labs has provided the basis to quickly and safely explore curcumin’s potential for Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases.

  • Curcumin has shown efficacy in many other pre-clinical culture and animal models for diseases related to aging and chronic treatment with related “curcuminoids” have even been able to increase the lifespan of mice.

  • Curcumin and Alzheimer’s Disease. Our group has tested curcumin in several models for Alzheimer’s and found that it not only reduces oxidative damage and inflammation (as expected), but also reduces amyloid accumulation and synaptic marker loss and promotes amyloid phagocytosis and clearance. Curcumin worked to prevent synaptic marker and cognitive deficits caused by amyloid peptide infusion and abeta oligomer toxicity in vitro. Our work on curcumin and AD is discussed in detail in our publications. and for information on enrolling in a curcumin trial see trials link . For news releases see News link.

Is Curcumin A Possible Wonder Drug?

3:10 PM
Curcumin, which comes from Tumeric. just may be the natural remedy researchers have long been waiting for! Currently it is being studied to help treat everything from AIDS and Alzheimer's to Cancer. So far, most studies look very promising and there have been very few negative side effects reported. UCLA is currently doing a long term study using Curcumin to treat Alzheimer's patients and so far the results have Scientists very optimistic. Here is a little background on Curcumin and why it is so beneficial. But before you run to your local Health Food store and ask for Curcumin, you need to understand that most commercially available curcumin is not Bio-Available, meaning it doesn't really absorb well or stay in the blood stream. It's taken researchers quite a bit of time to get the right formula down, so that it can actually be a bio-available treatment which crosses the Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB) Because my son has Down Syndrome, we closely follow new research on any natural product that reduces inflammation and plaque build up, especially since Down Syndrome and Alzheimer's Disease share many similar characteristics. In fact, it is now shown that most people with Down Syndrome will inevitably develop Alzheimer's Disease.

The benefits of taking curcumin daily, the active component of the spice turmeric, may be many or none, depending on the supplement. Many of the curcumin benefits have to do with the prevention of chronic and life threatening diseases that are often related to aging.

But, in order to provide this preventative benefit, it must be able to get to your bloodstream. Researchers have found that eating turmeric or taking a supplement by mouth does not significantly increase curcumin-levels in the blood. Digestive acids have a damaging effect that basically renders it useless for anything other than stomach complaints.

In order to get the long-term health benefits of taking curcumin daily, a supplement must include an enteric coating. The standard veggie-caps used by most supplement manufacturers don't work.

After scientists had done some of the research concerning the curcumin benefits as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agents, they looked at how well the compound is absorbed into the bloodstream. The measured blood serum levels after volunteers had taken very large amounts, up to 10 grams, and found that concentration was very low.

This is seen with other nutrients, as well. An enteric coating is necessary to allow the nutrients to make it through the stomach, undamaged. Once in the upper intestine, the nutrients can pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream.

The curcumin benefits that you will see listed on a standard supplement are based on laboratory studies using cell cultures and animal models. In order to provide the benefit, the nutrient must be able to interact directly with the cells. This will only happen if it is absorbed into the bloodstream. The same is true of resveratrol and other anti-cancer nutrients.

Assuming that the supplement is properly designed, the benefits of taking curcumin daily may include lower cholesterol, a healthier circulatory system and improved mental clarity. It may be beneficial for relieving stress, depression and anxiety, as it has been shown to increase concentrations of one of the brain's proteins. Called BDNF, low levels of this protein are associated with those conditions, as well as decreased mental clarity.

The Health Benefits of Curcumin The Health Benefits of Curcumin fnldwn This article discusses the potential health benefits associated with Curcumin. It shows the effects Curcumin has on cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and other diseases. It additionally talks about Curcumin's properties as an antioxidant.

Inspirational Mom Wins Fight To Use Natural Treatments To Help Her Daughters

8:52 AM
I recently had the privilege of speaking with Chris Hempel, mother to Cassidy and Addison, via Email. I am totally inspired by the work she is doing in helping to find treatments for her daughter's who have been diagnosed with the rare and so far fatal genetic condition called Niemann-Pick Type C. The article below was recently published in The Wall Street Journal and beautifully reported by Amy Docker Marcus. This an inspirational story for many reasons, and because this is a neurological condition with similarities to Alzheimers Disease, there may be treatments that work in Down Syndrome that could potentially work in treating Niemann-Pick Type C. To read more about Addi and Cassi Hempel after you read this article, go to their website HERE.
___________________________________________________________
By AMY DOCKSER MARCUS

From the moment her twin daughters, Addison and Cassidy, were diagnosed with a fatal genetic disease in October 2007, Chris Hempel has been searching for a drug that might save their lives.

The 5-year-old girls were diagnosed with a devastating cholesterol metabolism disorder known as Niemann-Pick Type C, which is ultimately fatal. Soon after, Ms. Hempel learned that researchers found that a form of a compound called cyclodextrin extended the lives of affected mice.

Ms. Hempel set out to gather as much data as possible. She got a list of all major cyclodextrin distributors and connected with one in Florida, who shared scientific studies and other information with her. She found a short report in the medical literature about a doctor who had treated a child with a different disease using cyclodextrin and tracked him down. She became increasingly hopeful that, although cyclodextrin isn't approved as a drug in the U.S., she might get the Food and Drug Administration to allow her to give cyclodextrin infusions to her girls as an experimental treatment.

Her search for information also led her to James Hildreth, 52, a pre-eminent AIDS researcher who heads the Center for AIDS Health Disparities Research at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. It turned out that he too was seeking FDA approval to run a trial using cyclodextrin, in a vaginal cream to help prevent HIV transmission during heterosexual sex. Ms. Hempel wanted him to combine forces with the NP-C investigators to push forward cyclodextrin research.

That was only the beginning of Ms. Hempel's long journey through the health-care research community -- a distributed and labyrinthine collection of researchers who, for all their expertise, often remain unaware of advances made elsewhere. The problem is even more acute among researchers working on different diseases. But for some serendipity, curiosity -- or, in this case, a willful Ms. Hempel -- some knowledge in one lab may never make its way to another that could be on the verge of a new therapy.

Drugs approved for one disease often turn out to be effective in others -- frequently when someone has a hunch. Thalidomide, originally used for morning sickness but taken off the market because it caused birth defects, is being used in cancer treatment.

Researchers at Pfizer were developing Viagra to treat high blood pressure when they noticed during early tests that it treated impotence. But that happened within the same company. It is even more difficult when researchers are at different labs.

When Ms. Hempel, who lives in Reno, Nev., became passionate about Dr. Hildreth's work, she was determined to bridge the disparate knowledge. "Right now we have limited data on cyclodextrin. But what if a lot of people started looking at it from different angles and across different diseases?" Ms. Hempel said. "It could lead to something that helps save Addi and Cassi's lives."

Ms. Hempel had been researching cyclodextrin for months when she attended the June 2008 meeting in Tucson, Ariz., of the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, set up by the family of the legendary football coach who lost three grandchildren to NP-C disease. The foundation was providing some funding for cyclodextrin studies in the rare disease, and the latest data were presented there. In an email sent after the meeting, Ms. Hempel wrote to the NP-C researchers that, based on the data she heard, she and her husband, Hugh, planned to seek FDA approval to give the girls cyclodextrin infusions. "I feel very strongly that we must try this to help save Addi and Cassi from this horrible disease," she wrote.

She had already put together a three-inch binder of research studies about cyclodextrin. Working with three other families whose children have NP-C disease, they hired a scientist who began writing a request to the FDA for the Hempel children to receive cyclodextrin infusions. But Ms. Hempel knew that she needed more human data if she was going to persuade the FDA that the drug was safe enough to use in her children.

While searching for safety data on cyclodextrin, she spoke with Charles E. Strattan, a cyclodextrin expert and CEO of CTD Holdings Inc., who was helping Ms. Hempel do research. He told her Dr. Hildreth was interested in the same compound for his work in HIV and suggested that the two of them talk.

During a long phone conversation in October 2008, Dr. Hildreth told Ms. Hempel that he believed the protein responsible for NP-C disease also plays an important role in HIV. And in previously published work, he showed that cyclodextrin appeared to inactivate the HIV virus and prevent it from replicating.

The talk galvanized Ms. Hempel. Dr. Hildreth offered to share what he knew about cyclodextrin's safety with the FDA in support of the Hempels' request. Ms. Hempel proposed that the two of them go to Johnson & Johnson, which had studied cyclodextrin, to see if the company would be interested in sponsoring a clinical trial. "I knew our stories would be even more powerful if we told them together," she said.

As is typical in the field, Dr. Hildreth was reluctant to share unpublished data, and he rarely went to scientific meetings that weren't related to HIV. He was moved by Ms. Hempel's efforts to help her children, but also surprised by her embrace of his work. "Some of the things we as scientists take for granted about how work will be done and the fact there are silos, with her there is none of that at all," he said.

When Ms. Hempel called a top National Institutes of Health AIDS researcher to tell him about Dr. Hildreth's findings and propose joint work in HIV and NP-C disease, Dr. Hildreth told her that a scientist never would have made such a call. In recent months, Ms. Hempel has introduced Dr. Hildreth to NP-C researchers who were also studying cyclodextrin. She also arranged for him to discuss his HIV findings with two Nobel Prize-winning scientists interested in Niemann-Pick proteins. "Our paths would not have crossed otherwise," he said.

He and Ms. Hempel recently had a conversation with senior officials at Johnson & Johnson. The FDA at first turned down the Hempels' request to do cyclodextrin infusions in the girls, concerned there wasn't enough human safety data. But after Ms. Hempel contacted them about her plight, the company wrote a letter to the FDA giving the agency permission to look at all of the safety data it had submitted related to cyclodextrin. The FDA subsequently gave permission for the Hempels to proceed. The girls will start cyclodextrin infusions this month.

That might have been the end of the story except for Ms. Hempel's insistence that more was at stake, says Steven A. Silber, a vice president at Johnson & Johnson. After listening to Ms. Hempel and Dr. Hildreth's presentation, Dr. Silber set up a meeting so Dr. Hildreth can present his data to the head of one of its companies that makes anti-viral medications. Dr. Hildreth says that Ms. Hempel's involvement got his research "the attention of individuals higher up in the organization than I might have been able to get on my own."

This May, the Parseghian Foundation will host its annual scientific meeting. The group plans to hold a special session dedicated to the work on cyclodextrin. Cindy Parseghian, president of the foundation, says she hopes researchers working with cyclodextrin in other diseases will also attend. "We think there should be more cross-fertilization," she said. Dr. Hildreth says he plans to share his findings at the meeting.

Dr. Hildreth recognizes that his unusual partnership with Ms. Hempel also has some risks for the HIV trial he is planning. "It is a remote possibility, but is a possibility, that if her beautiful girls are done some harm by the infusions, that would clearly do harm to our efforts," he said. Still, he adds, "I spent a lot of time thinking about what I would do if I were in her position. My answer is I would do exactly the same thing."

Late last month, the Hempel girls underwent surgery at a California hospital to get a small medical device implanted under their skin to make it easier to receive regular cyclodextrin infusions. Dr. Hildreth visited them in the hospital.

Is Your Mattress Toxic?

7:22 AM

BEFORE YOU READ THIS ARTICLE, GO HERE!

The recent articles we published on Memory Foam Mattresses warranted an unexpected call from the guy that heads the 'Mattress Association'. He was apparently upset with our use of certain terminology in the articles and wanted to clarify a few things. The problem was, he didn't clarify anything and couldn't prove anything different than what had already been stated in the articles. He didn't like our choice of wording like 'Fire Retardant' and wanted us to use the term 'Flame Retardant'. Other than that, he really had nothing poignant to say. He did admit that mattress companies have determined, within their own industry, that all chemicals used in the manufacturing and flame retarding of mattresses are completely safe. They have also determined that none of the chemicals used in the manufacturing of mattresses need to be disclosed to the public. This is why, when you buy a mattress, any type of mattress, you will never see a Content List. You will see tags that say 'All New Materials' or 'Made In China' but you won't ever see the actual contents in your mattress. Read more about this here:

Thanks to NonToxicBed.com for this.
The new flameproof mattress regulation (July-07 National, Jan-05 California) requires all mattresses now withstand a severe open flame test. This requires known acutely toxic and cancer causing chemicals in or next to the surface of all mattresses. It is proven we will absorb these chemicals every night.

There are no labeling requirements for these chemicals. Many major mattress manufacturers have admitted to news media they are required to use, and do use these chemicals in their mattresses. (See these news stories and videos at the “Making News” link.) But then these same and almost all mattress manufactures deny using chemicals to their customers, even ones who have gotten sick.

Organic mattresses often claim to use wool to pass the open flame test. Wool burns at 600 degrees and the open flame test is 2,000 degrees for over a minute. It is scientifically impossible for untreated wool to pass this test. Since there are no labeling requirements for these chemicals even the wool and other fire barrier suppliers often tell mattress manufacturers their systems contain no chemicals. Unfortunately, many mattress manufactures and consumers want to believe this. (See the link “Wool Burns” for more proof.)

Antimony (a heavy metal almost identical to Arsenic), Boric Acid (yes, the Roach Killer), Silicon (Silica Glass, a known respiratory hazard and carcinogen), Melamine, Formaldehyde, Decabromodiphenyl Oxide, and Ammonium Polyphosphate are the main chemicals being used by mattress manufacturers to meet the new state and federal flammability standards.

The government has proven these chemicals leach to the surface of our mattresses and are absorbed by our bodies. They have proven we will absorb .8 mg of Antimony, and .08 mg of Boric Acid every day. We know Antimony accumulates in our bodies, is acutely toxic, and also causes cancer.

Many doctors say this is not safe. Many people do not want to absorb poisons nightly to avoid a one in 1.111 million mattress fire risk. Many people have already gotten sick. Dr. Lawrence A. Plumlee, MD, says: “How many are intolerant who don’t know why they can’t sleep or feel bad?”

There are now no mattresses that are free of toxic chemicals.

But, we do offer you solutions that are truly toxin-free.

NonToxicBeds has manufactured mattresses for over 30 years under various labels for customers worldwide.

We strongly oppose the new national flameproof mattress regulation because the risk outweighs the benefit. We think it is a very serious health risk. Many doctors agree. Sleepers and workers are already getting sick. These should be strong warning signs for the rest of us. Workers complained early on of Asbestos health effects, but no one listened. It took 40 years and hundreds of thousands of deaths to prove Asbestos harmful. A relatively small percentage of our population was exposed to Asbestos, but everyone sleeps on a mattress. We continue to make toxic mistakes. We ban one flame retardant chemical after another, after we find human harm. What will we learn in the next 40 years? How many millions of Americans will die slow painful deaths from the long term effects of poison mattresses?
We offer this website to provide low manufacturer direct pricing and great values so more people can afford truly nontoxic mattresses.
We hope you will help get the word out on the truth about the toxic chemicals now being added to mattresses. Although the issue had made some news it is not enough. Almost all mattress manufactures and retailers continue to tell people there are no chemicals in mattresses, there are no labeling requirements. So most people still don't know or find it hard to believe it could be that bad. But it is very bad.

Natural Cures For Asthma That Actually Work!

2:56 PM
Before You Read This Ariticle Go Here!

I have personally struggled with allergies for as long as I can remember. I have been searching long and hard for an all natural Asthma remedy and it has been difficult. I know what it's like to feel so vulnerable and miserable while not being able to breathe. When I get a bad allergy attack which is usually once a year, I'm almost guaranteed having to use an inhaler, which I keep on hand for emergencies. In fact, it's the only pharmaceutical drug in our whole house! Anybody who has ever had an 'asthma attack' knows the feeling of not being able to breathe. For me it's always allergy induced, usually from dogs or cats or a bad cold. The good news is, ever since I eliminated Gluten and Sugar from my diet, my allergies have all but disappeared for the most part. But, they're not entirely gone and I want them to be. I know it's possible to heal your immune system and eliminate allergies for good, you just need to find out what your own triggers are and heal your body. Sometimes your body needs a little holistic help as well, which is fine. If you are looking for a holistic Asthma remedy, I also highly recommend these 2 products from Native Remedies.

I recently started adding 1 teaspoon of Carlsons Fish oil into my daily diet because it is a proven anti-inflamatory. Then I added 1 clove of fresh garlic a day into my diet, which is anti-fungal and blood cleansing. Then I added a freshly blended Berry/vege juice into my daily diet (I'll post the recipe below) and I realized that my lungs and sinuses hadn't felt this clear since I can remember. Asthma can also be helped tremendously by eliminating allergy triggers from the diet which is often the root cause of your immune system issues. If you struggle with asthma, please read the article below.

Help Your Asthma Naturally From Mercola.Com

Asthma has increasingly become a very common affliction. In fact, it now affects some 20 million Americans, as it has increased by more than 300 percent over the last 20 years.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition, typically of your upper airways, that can cause:

  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing

Coughing is frequently overlooked, however it is one of the hidden symptoms, so if you suffer from unexplained bouts of coughing, you should consider getting yourself checked for asthma.

The Dangers of Conventional Asthma Treatments

The conventional asthma treatment typically consists of a non-steroidal bronchodilator – an anti-inflammatory agent that you inhale. It causes the smooth muscle cells in your lungs to relax, which opens up your airways.

If that doesn’t t work, the next level is typically an inhaled steroid, which is a very potent anti-inflammatory agent. The reason these aggressive types of intervention are performed is because asthma is indeed a serious condition. It can be fatal, so you need to be serious about treating it.

Unfortunately, the conventional approaches are not without side effects.

In addition to local side effects, the most common side effect -- which is typically not appreciated -- is that non-steroidal bronchodilators will double your risk of a heart attack.

And steroids, even though they can help reduce the inflammation in your lungs, are fraught with serious side effects, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Impaired growth of your body and internal organs (including your brain)
  • Infections
  • Cataracts
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes
  • Weight gain
  • High blood pressure, and a variety of other disease conditions

These aggressive drug approaches clearly do not treat the cause of your asthma, and they can be quite dangerous, even lethal.

Clearly you’ll want to avoid having to resort to such measures. Fortunately there are simple strategies you can use that will virtually eliminate your need for these medications.

Safe and Effective Strategies to Treat Your Asthma

Although asthma is a serious disease, safely treating your asthma is not a complicated affair. Here are some basic, simple strategies that can help treat the root of your problem:

Optimize your vitamin D levels – We now know that there’s a very strong connection between vitamin D levels and asthma, as vitamin D can be a very powerful immune modulator. However, I don’t suggest just taking the recommended daily allowance, which is a mere 400 units a day. You really need to make sure you’re getting therapeutic levels.

This is ideally obtained from exposing a significant amount of your skin -- not just your hands and face -- to appropriate amounts of sunlight.

What is an appropriate amount of sun exposure?

Enough, from either the sun or a safe tanning bed, to turn your skin the very lightest shade of pink. Once you reach that shade of pink, your body is not going to produce any more vitamin D. In fact, you’re only going to cause damage to your skin if you increase your exposure past that point.

You can actually produce up to 20,000 units of vitamin D per day through this kind of exposure. However, you don’t need to be concerned with how much you’re producing, as your skin has a feedback loop that will shut down the production of vitamin D past a certain point. As you get sufficient levels in your body you’ll automatically produce less accordingly, so there’s never any risk of overdosing when getting your vitamin D from the sun.

When you swallow vitamin D however, this feedback loop does not exist so you need to be careful if you chose to take an oral vitamin D supplement as overdosing can be just as bad as being severely deficient.

I do recommend oral supplements if you don’t have regular access to the sun or a safe tanning bed. But if you do, make sure you monitor your blood with an accurate test . The one caution here in the US is to be certain your test is performed at a lab like Labcorp, that uses the gold standard Diasorin test for checking vitamin D levels. Due to information published by the New York Times about Quest labs, where they admitted to inaccurate results, I no longer recommend using them.

If you get your levels to about 60 ng/ml, there’s a strong likelihood -- especially if you combine it with exercise and balancing out your omega 3 and omega 6 fats as described below -- that you will not experience the symptoms of asthma anymore.

Increase your intake of animal-based omega 3 fats – I can’t emphasize enough the importance of getting sufficient amounts of high quality animal-based omega 3 fats in your diet.

Because although I strongly believe we all need plant-based omega 3 fats (and I consume some virtually every day myself, like hemp seed or flax seed), the difference is that most of us do not possess the metabolic machinery to rapidly convert the ALA in these plants to the higher order fats DHA and EPA, which are potent anti-inflammatories.

Although I still recommend fish oil in some instances, I believe krill oil is an even better source of omega 3 fats for most people.

Reduce your intake of omega 6 fats – In addition to adding omega 3 fats to your diet, you also want to reduce the amount of omega 6 fats you consume because the ratio between these two fats is very important.

Many don’t realize that about a century ago, people only consumed 1-2 pounds of plant-based omega 6 fats per year. Today, the average American is consuming about 75-80 pounds a year of these vegetable oils, such as corn oil, soy- and safflower oil.

When you eat lots of them, which you will if you use a lot of processed foods, the balance between omega 3 and omega 6 fats will become distorted, which can cause the type of inflammation that leads to asthma.

Consider the hygiene hypothesis – There’s a tendency in our modern culture to be obsessive about cleanliness, especially in children. However, this may not be as healthy as initially thought. It appears that being exposed to common bacterial and viral infections as a child can be instrumental in providing the stimulus to your immune system to prevent asthma naturally.

Get regular exerciseExercise (especially out in fresh air if you’re an asthmatic) is actually crucial as it helps to moderate your insulin levels. It increases your insulin receptor sensitivity, and as a result your body produces less insulin, which tends to optimize it. Research has also shown that asthmatics who exercise tend to show improvement in:

  • Maximum ventilation
  • Maximal oxygen uptake
  • Work capacity, and
  • Maximum heart rate

You can also use allergy testing to build up your immune system. My experience is that conventional testing does not work very effectively and there is a fair amount of risk. A far better intradermal skin test would be provocation neutralization testing.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has a list of physicians who are trained in this highly effective technique.

Conclusion

Don’t you agree it’s a safer and wiser strategy to address the cause of your disease, rather than treating the symptoms with expensive, potentially dangerous drugs? If you follow these simple strategies mentioned above, you can virtually eliminate your need for bronchodilators and steroid drugs.
